Moving Across Country

Welcome to MovingAcrossCountry.org, your all-in-one online resource for moving across country.  A few years back I had the opportunity to move over 500 miles, twice.  Cross country moving is not something you want to do without planning.  I didn’t use any cross country movers, but you may want to if it gets to hectic.  I hope my story helps you in your move across the country.

First Time Moving Across the Country

The first time I was forced to move quickly and get rid of many of our possessions.  The second move allowed us time to plan and made the move a little easier.

License Plate USA

Moving across country the first time was after Hurricane Katrina.  We moved from New Orleans to Houston.  We tried to rent a truck, but they were hard to come by because so many people were moving things.  We were able to borrow a box truck and move a small portion of the things we owned.  We gave away or left all of our furniture and major appliances and half of the other things we owned.  We moved on a shoestring budget.

Also, getting our mail was hard.  We had to open a P.O. Box.  Then we had to let the post office know our address changed so our mail could be sent to the P.O. Box.

Second Time Moving Across the Country

The second time we moved it was back to New Orleans from Houston.  This time we didn’t own as much but we did have more than we had left with, including 1000 sq ft of travertine tile for our new house.  This time we rented a trailer and pickup truck and moved everything.

We hope that the info we provide here will help you make your move easier.  This site is an ongoing work to share our experiences, experiences from around the web and good information that will help make your move across country economical and as smooth as possible

Moving Checklist

It’s always a good idea to plan before you do anything, especially when moving.  A good checklist will help you keep focus on the task at hand.  It will allow you mind to be free from trying to remember all of the things you have to do.  This will help you make better decisions as you are moving.  We have put together some checklist to help you move.

Also remember to plan to have things to do in the car on your move.  Nothing is worse than being bored on the road, unless its being bored on the road with bored children.

Moving Heavy Items

Many things you will move will not be heavy.  But there are a few things that most moves include that are impossible for one person to move.  Items like a piano, washer, dryer, and a refrigerator can be daunting even for the most experience mover.  We have an article on moving a refrigerator that you should checkout before making your move.  We will update this page with other guides for moving heavy items as we create them.
